Can't get bubble column

On my server running 1.13 pre7, I cannot get a bubble column to start. I have made several with earlier Pre snapshots (before Pre6), but they were shorter, this one goes from Y17 to Y72. Just about 20 some blocks away, I have one that goes from Y9 to Y23. It started right up when I placed the top water block. I can't find where this has been reported before, but I'm leery of reporting it. Anybody have any idea what is going on? It appears that the water in the 1x1 column does not create water blocks, just falling water. I even tried making a 1x2 with signs on the one side, no joy...

I found that every block of water above it needs to be a water source

Yes, but the placing of a water block at the top should create a column of water blocks, as has happened with the other elevators I have made in the snapshots.

Maybe that was a bug with water behaviour. I don't think placing one source block prior to 1.13 created a 'tower' of source blocks.

Placing one water source block above, does not make every block beneath a source block.
The proof is that if you remove the top waterblock, the tower drops down to the ground, or to the next water source block beneath.

So those elevators on the creative server had water blocks placed all the way up? The one at my fishing farm was created by building the tower and the placing one water block at the top.

What I usually do is just pillar up on ice all the way and then break it on way back... so much easier than using buckets..

Thanks EZ, I have always done things manually with no auto anything. This makes my progress much slower than most other folks, this time I think I will try to speed things up a bit. Getting some enchants and items earlier should help me a bit, but I know nothing about how those things work

I cannot follow those how to do it vids. Looked at many over the years and always make mistakes that I cannot debug!

I find having the video on a second screen and just pausing at every step, it's usually possible to work it out.

The AFK fishers are really easy though, there's no complicated redstone/etc, they only use a few blocks in total for the basic machine. You may want to add more storage/etc, but the basics should be easy to follow.

Been there & tried that, I even have trouble building an auto-smelter. I need Uncle EZ to hold my hand 8)))

The auto smelter is a far trickier build though, you'd manage the AFKer no problem, it's only about 10 blocks.
