I know lots of you are clever computer hardware types, so maybe you can help?

My Dell has a loose connection to the screen. It only works if I hold one corner forwards slightly. Otherwise it comes up grey with lines across. Sound is fine, everything else is fine.

I can't find anything online, but is there something I can do without taking it to a shop and spending loads?

Sounds like a structural failure causing a faulty connection. Probably going to be a new monitor. Wish I could be more helpful.

(( last resort; you never know, it might help))

is it a laptop or Pc? if its a laptop the ribbon cable to the motherboard could be loose or damaged i do find Dells pretty nice to take apart myself but obviously has a possibility of going wrong. if its a Monitor might need new cable or a new monitor (but always go with cable first)

Oops, it's a laptop. Probably should have remembered to say that in the first post!
It's a Dell Inspiron 15 5000

Berg, I am very, very tempted.

Avril, I suspect it is the cable, when it started it would come back if I moved the angle of the screen. Now its completely given up. Damn thing isn't even a year old! I think it was my kids, one of them pulled one side while the other one pushed the other, so the screen twisted.

If you have a link to a tutorial that might be useful I'd appreciate it! I'm fairly competent if I have clear instructions.

Yea the ribbon cables are a pain. With a lot of luck it could be that one end has come partly out of it's socket or a solder connection or two have broken, not too expensive a fix, the time taken to strip it down would be the main item.

The twisting sounds ominous tho' - could be that the multiple connections to the LCD panel itself have broken, that's nasty.

Service manual link below, should be some detail on how to strip it down, good luck!

"Not even a year old..." :o
If you lived in the same country as me, you could just take the thing down to the shop where you bought it and have them fix it for free. We have a 2 year law required warrenty here, and if there are no external damage signs, they have to fix it for you - at no cost to you. Even apple have been having some problems with this warrenty and been forced to replace socalled "refurbished" phones with new ones, because it's required by this law. Not that they didn't fight it, mind you...

But my money's on the ribbon cables connection too.

It all comes down to damage, as Boye says. You’re well within warranty period if it’s less than a year. Consumer law covers you for 5 years too (might even be 6 in England). But, if there’s damage or wear and tear above what would be considered normal then neither option would help you.

Yes, if there is mechanical damage caused by the twisting; cracked/twisted hinge components etc you're on your own.

Would be worth contacting the seller or Dell and seeing what happens 8)

Thanks, everyone. Unfortunately I didn't register it with Dell when I got it, there was a lot going on, it fell under the radar. I think that might mean it isn't under warranty.

I'm not certain it was the kids twisting it, it could just be coincidence, but the fact that it comes back on if I move it a certain way makes me hope it's just the ribbon. I guess I can only try, right?

Don't be mis-lead, you'll have your warranty (by law), you don't need to fill in forms/register/etc. Anything sold must be warrantied. If there's no signs of physical damage at all, then don't try and fix it yourself, that would invalidate it.

Thanks, Steve! It says it's in warranty and runs out in November, the store I got it from were telling me it has to be registered.

I'll call Dell in the morning and see what they can do.

yeah go direct to dell, Argos Voided my warranty with Toshiba because they opened it up.

Good job, Argos  I got mine from pcworld, though to be honest I don't hear great things about their repair service.

I'll call Dell when they open tomorrow.

Yep, the fact you've got a Dell is good, it's fairly easy to deal with. Repairs through a 3rd party seller are sometimes necessary, but not in this case, you can deal with them directly.
