Shops

Anyway, everything is relative to the main focus of the Hangout shopping experience, that is "Forever Dirt" of course.

For example; Behind 'Forever Dirt" or opposite the front of "Forever Dirt" and 2 shops away.

I've heard it rumoured that there is actually FREE dirt underneath Forever Dirt and they get their stock for nothing. Or maybe someone was just digging up the dirt on this reputable business?

Can avoid using farmed materials in our trade system? It has the same effect as counterfeit money, it totally devalues our market. I was selling diamonds for 10 for 25 gold. Another player was selling 32 gold for 5 diamonds. I have closed my store until we get this sorted out.

There's no "actual" money. The real money is time, time spent farming regardless if the source is infinite or not. Diamonds are kind of infinite in the sense that if you keep mining in a direction you're not going to suddenly deplete the supply. If I spend 30 minutes mining and get 20 diamonds that way then I'll have essentially made 50 gold. If I spend 30 minutes fooling around in the nether killing every pigman I can get my hands on maybe I'll make 50 gold? Alternatively, I might not even find a single diamond in 30 minutes.

I reread your post and just realized you said someone was selling 32 gold for 5 diamonds? I thought they were selling 5 diamonds for 32 gold, so I thought your store had the better deal. In either scenario one person can get screwed over because of the differing exchange rates and time values placed on the resources.

I've been bumrushing getting all the equipment I need setup so that I can make mining easier. I used your diamond shop to get the diamonds I needed to buy the gear I needed to get a haste 2 beacon. Now I'm using the haste 2 beacon to farm more materials faster (namely iron and diamonds). I will admit, I only got about 80 ingots from pigmen. I did that because I got tired of caving and branch mining and because it's fun to kill pigmans and ghasts. :) The rest came from mining. And with the haste 2 beacon I can "farm" gold faster than I can farm it off pigmen. It would be bad if someone decided to make a gold farm, but in that case people simply have different time values for specific resources. The person with the gold farm can sell gold for as little as they like because it doesn't consume a lot of time for them. I also went and bought out all the iron at that one shop. Almost cleaned out the shulker shop. shakes fist at Ros with grumpy face

Which leads to another problem... setting up infrastructure to support gathering resources. Once someone has the ability to generate NPCs and farm them for emeralds they can eventually get the major enchanting books. Mending probably being the most prominent. It will take time to reach that point, but it is possible eventually. The amount of resource generating farms you'll need is pretty crazy though.

I make my shops to generate diamond so that i can then put it back into someones elses shop. Not to become rich.

These are my views:
Mending has made diamond much less valuable but in turn has made it much easier to use as a currency as its hardly used for anything else. Its still rare which would be a criteria as any form of currency needs to not be able to inflate current circulation of it easily.

The only problem i see is shops selling diamonds for another item, this does cause issues of exchange rates and cam cause inflation.

However there are 2 good points for this.

Buyer: I see it being helpful for someone who does have excess stock of something and would like currency (diamond) in turn to pay for something else.

Seller: Its also good as if someone who had been making a lot of diamonds has no other use of it but requires other materials then they can place the diamond they make back into circulation.

The only way a need for this can be prevented is that as long as there is a shop for atleast every material in the game so that the Seller can then go buy what they need at another shop and put the diamonds back into circulation. But this will be unlikely due to the following:
  • There isnt a shop for every material in the game
  • If there was they are always going to be stocked up
Just my thoughts while on break at work.

I really don't understand why this whole currency/economy is a big deal. This is a game. You put blocks down to make things. Children play it.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter who has what or who is selling what because this is a video game. It does not matter. This isn't Wall Street. There is no market. You can't devalue something that isn't there.

These shops are supposed to be a fun way of getting something you need and getting rid of something you don't. There's like 3--maybe more--people selling Mending books at different prices. I don't see them closing their shops because someone is selling them cheaper.

This game is supposed to be friends having fun, not throwing stones about market values and currency.

Sheesh.

For me, anyway, selling things are much less about making diamonds, and much more about making it easier for someone else to get things in the game, that would otherwise take a lot of time to generate. I tend to gather a lot, and thus my prices usually reflect, as Schematix said, the time put into said material.

Considering that everything being sold including diamonds, are crafting materials, there is no actual currency, and we can't value any of them as such. (hence there is no such thing as counterfeit materials either).

I don't honestly see any issue with our current trade system, it's all about demand and supply.

Yeah i agree. As stated in the first line of my post i have a shop so that i can then make some diamond to buy things i need while others can get what they need from me. I think the reason why diamonds are seen as a currency is again that its rare and cant be used for much anymore othen then the odd pickaxe or 2 and that its hard to barter for things when people are not online when you need the item now. As Ros said, there is no real currency, its what someone wants in return for what they are selling. Im selling my sand for diamonds purely because i need to buy other things that people are selling for diamonds. If it was anything else id sell my sand for whatever item i need to buy other things for. Again its a continuous circle and it works. I havent since starting needed to go for a massive diamond hunt because ive had the same tools from the start.

For instance ny redstone consultancy business will be most likely be paid for via coal, redstone, quartz, slime etc. Things i use a lot instead of diamond because currently the redstone supplies shop isnt stocked enough for me to want diamonds from it.

As a foot note, the gold being sold at a lower rate than you're buying it D, is not even farmed, just good old gathering. The reason I'm selling it, is because someone needed it for crafting, and thus 10 diamonds per 20-some gold, seemed extremely steep for people who are fairly new to the server. And let's be honest, the people who can afford 10 diamonds for that, usually have the gold they need anyway.

I think a lot of this is being overthought.

If you want to pay 10 diamonds for 25 gold bars, and you get your 25 gold bars for 10 diamonds... job done, you got what you want.

The answer to all this is price carefully, make sure you're asking what you really want. Doesn't matter what the shop next door is doing, doesn't matter where the materials come from, if you're getting the goods you want for the price you're happy with, happy days.

As mentioned, I think diamonds are now the perfect currency, thanks to mending. They are almost valueless for everyone apart from brand new members. Other than buying things in shops (and re-making a couple of picks I stupidly broke), I don't think I've used any.

The market can be whatever people want it to be. I was merely hoping for a reasonable amount of standardization. Also I was just making my concern public. I didn't expect a bloody fucking spanish Inquisition.

This was the first thing Shanks and I did :o

For me, the shops are a little side game, one that is fun because people like Capt.Marko sell dirt, or like Ros who sells EVERYTHING. Its flavour, and occasionally convenience. I dont worry about the prices tbh. Also the shops look really cool! For me, I have access to all the materials I might want, so MC is about building cool stuff and hanging out with friends and helping people.

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!

But I can get behind standardization of prices! as I said above, I am not concerned about the prices one or the other and I am very happy to bring my wool prices in line with a currency standard, if we could all agree on one.
