Opened up a customer's 2010 model 27" iMac today to replace a failed hard drive. Was looking around trying to find the temperature sensor to remove it and spotted this:

The drive was replaced 2 years ago by the local Apple *authorised* repair centre. And they somehow thought a) that was an acceptable fix for the sensor and b) leaving bare wires where they can come in contact with the logic board is a good idea.

It's not often these machines surprise me, but that's a new one on me. :rolleyes:
 
If that wasn't hooliganism it would be funny. The worst most damaged repair I had ( before my eyes started to go) was a Unibody MBP, customer said "there's a hole in it".. "doesn't always come on and the DVD won't work"

Got there and it was a pottery workshop. They had dropped something heavy and sharp on it that had pierced the case ( that's difficult!). "It worked for ages after that" they said. Opening it revealed about 200g of clay powder and dust inside.... overheating? It was fried.
 
I can't say I have seen anything like that in a computer, since I have built my own PC's the last 10 years. As an auto mechanic though, I have many times been surprised by the ingenuity and resourcefulness of some of my fellow mechanics, and been impressed with what they got working (I didn't finish that sentence with "properly" on purpose). And what some of them got away with is quite impressive too...
And how long costumers have been willing to accept noise, scraping sounds and very loose steering is a constant source of wonder.

After working on roadside repairs for 1½ years now, I have come to learn the truth behind these things:
The drivers have no clue whatsoever about how their cars works, beyond starting the car and turning the wheel. And they are so afraid of what it will cost to fix the car, that they will believe anything a "mechanic" tells them, if he can convince them they are saving money when he fixes the car.
