Xp shower trick

I have started a little server to play on until the reset, and I was wanting to duplicate our fabulous XP shower in spawn. Survival doesnt allow command blocks without tricks, I used a command line to make a command block, but the game wont let me play it. Any help that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Are you in creative mode? You can only place and interact with command blocks in creative.

Also, the server has to have command blocks enabled, they aren't by default.

Once you've got that far, the command you want to put in it is:
/summon xp_orb ~-1 ~4 ~ {Value:5}

You'll likely want to fiddle with those co-ords to suit your setup.

Thanks very much, Steve, so I would have to change the game mode to creative, create the command block, then change back to Survival?

If you're an op on your server, then you can just change your own game mode (/gamemode creative) do what you need and then change back (/gamemode survival).
