General How to Install 1.14.4 Optifine and VoxelMap(will update)

Edit 1/21/2020: Optifine is 65% complete to being compatible with 1.15.1. As with any update, most of these mods need to update also. As they do, I will do my best to update this thread.

It is hard to go back to playing without these mods installed, and so I've found the way to do this with the newest iteration. Hopefully I can help you install them, too!

First of all, what do these do?

From Optifine's website: "It allows Minecraft to run faster and look better with full support for HD textures and many configuration options. " I use shaders and don't have the most modern pc anymore(i5 6600k and nvidia 970), so I need optifine or my fps is not acceptable. This may enable you to have a smoother experience, too.

VoxelMap. Let me tell you, I avoided using this for awhile. I liked the novelty of the minecraft maps. However, that came to an end as I died a dozen times in a row trying to find all of my gear in the end. I never found that gear, but voxelmap helps that issue by mapping out where I've been and makes deaths and waypoints. It also makes pixel art easier to see from the top down, easier to see mobs, and track players when you are lost in their gigantic bases!

Now that we have visited what they do, let's start on how to get them.

I started with a fresh install of minecraft, but that isn't necessary. Also, if you start with a fresh install, be sure to backup any screenshots, instances, or resource packs.

Now then, let's download the needed files. We need Fabric(loads the mods we will be using), Fabricapi(a set of tools the mods use), Voxelmap, Optifine, and Optifabric(allows optifine to run with fabric).

Fabric - http://fabricmc.net/use/
1899

In this tutorial, we will be installing to Minecraft vanilla. If you use any of the other installations of Minecraft, I would assume know what you are doing. I downloaded the JAR version, and the expert options/snapshot versions are not important. Go ahead and run it after it downloads.

These are the settings I ran with and the default options. Your install location should be similar unless you've used a different letter for your OS's partition(probably ignore this).

Fabric API - https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/fabric-api/files
I couldn't find this on their official website, but I am sure it is there somewhere. Anyway, curseforge will do.

1910

After you download this, just move/copy it into your mods folder.
1901

It should be located in C:/Users/[Your PC username]/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/mods.
You may have to change your folder view settings if you are navigating via explorer.

Folderoptions.jpg

Click View and then on the right, options. This brings down the only option. Next, click the view tab, and make sure under "Hidden files and folders" the radio button for Show hidden files is marked.

1909

We change this because Windows has the AppData folder hidden by default.

After you've copied the FabricAPI file into the mods folder, run minecraft with the fabric profile.

fabriclaunch.jpg

This takes a little bit as it is installing some more files. Specifically, we need access to the configuration folder later, maybe.
So far, we've installed fabric. This really doesn't do much by itself so, lets install some mods. Keep that mod folder open!

VoxelMap - https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/voxelmap/files

1911

This one is straight forward. We just need to download voxelmap and copy/move it to the mod folder.

So, if you just wanted the map, don't need shaders, and it runs fine. You are done! Enjoy hanging out!

If you need/want optifine, the next post is for you...

Optifabric - https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/optifabric/files

1912

Optifabric is a mod that allows Fabric and Optifine to work together, mostly...

Just copy this into your mods folder.

Optifine - https://optifine.net/adloadx?f=preview_OptiFine_1.14.4_HD_U_F2_pre1.jar&x=cdfa

1913

This link wasn't on their website for some reason, but it is in there. Download that and open it.

1914

This window should appear and have the default Minecraft installation already selected. First, install.

1915

Next, we are going to extract. For the most part, we shouldn't need to extract. Some mods don't work if we don't and better safe than sorry. It is going to ask you where to extract. Navigate to your mods folder and extract it to there.

1916

Your mods folder should look like this. The folder is there if you ran minecraft with voxelmap installed. If it isn't there, don't worry.

1920

If you try to run now, you will just get an error and it will not load. So, let's take care of that.

Fabric changed to a different renderer that is not compatible with Optifine. However, both optifine and fabric are great and updating super fast. Let's get them working now.

Remember that configuration folder I talked about, let's open 'er up. It should be located in your .minecraft folder.

1917

Inside of that is the fabric folder, then there is the file we need to edit. indigo-renderer.properties

Open it up with notepad(or wordpad if you are mad).

1918

Change the always-tesselate-blocks to false and ambient-occlusion-mode to vanilla. Those two lines should be there. You should just have to change the last words.

1919

Save, and close.

Guess what? You are done! Run minecraft like normal and enjoy those mods now. Install shaders, mark waypoints, and don't lose your stuff!

See you in the game!

Capn, you have saved my life and my sanity. Thanks for taking the time to bless us with this knowledge!
btw I did fresh install like you suggested. my minecraft folder was like 9GB lol. After that, i got no more crash game messages. Also took me a bit to figure out to open the Properties file with Notepad. I should have done this long ago!

during this part

Change the always-tesselate-blocks to false and ambient.occlusion-mode to vanilla.

which is near the end
use the pic dont copy the text as its a hyphen not a dot between ambient-occlusion

or at least thats what worked for me

I appreciate the feedback! I was meaning to do this when we first updated to 1.14, but the change to 1.14.4 really prompted it. When Forge updates to work with optifine, I may make one for that, as well so that there is no config changes needing to be made.

On Macos, so I don't know if this is _just_ me or if its wider.

The Optifabric Mod fails unless the Optifine.jar is in the mods folder.
