Possible changes to the HangOut world setup - looking for feedback!

We really appreciate the input you guys have been giving us recently. After having read your comments and considerations, we've been talking about making some changes to our entire world setup.

Below is a summon up;

We'd have 4 worlds you access from the Hub:
  • Vanilla (as it currently is)
  • Seasonal (what we currently call main)
  • Permanent (the same setup that is on main right now, but with a map that is never reset)
  • Test world (as it currently is).

You would be able to transfer items between Seasonal and Permanent, up until the current seasonal (main) is reset for Season 5, so that you don't have to lose all the things you have accumulated on our current main map.

We realise that many of you play on vanilla solely due to the map being permanent, and with that in mind, we'd also like to offer to copy your builds on Vanilla over to the Permanent map, if that is something you would like. We would only be offering build transfer between Vanilla and Permanent, not between Seasonal and Permanent.

There would be no immediate changes to the Seasonal map (current main), until the end of Season 4.

We'd love to hear what you think about this idea, if you have any suggestions, input, all that jazz!

EDIT: One small tweak to all that, to say, the Permanent world will likely be moderately sized to start with, but will grow in size with each MC update (or certainly any MC update that affects world gen).

My thoughts:
- permanent map sounds nice, at the cost of extra fracturing the playerbase. Not sure how good of an idea that is, but people are just wildly different
- what is intended with "limited use" grave mod? What is the intention behind this change?
- What will the difficulties (easy, normal, hard) be across the various worlds?
- I made the suggestion that people get to choose their own experience even on the same map (say, enabling grave mod for themselves or not, that kinda thing), whats your thoughts on that?

In Path of Exile, at the end of a season, the players' stuff is automatically transferred to the permanent league (called "standard" there) - would this be a good idea? The exact method/implementation would need to be decided still, but I wanted to throw the idea out there.

One more thing: I want to advocate for publishing the world seeds in the future. Sure, that allows people to cheat and find certain structures (end portals, ...) by using seed-based methods, but I don't see the harm in that (if you want to retain the start-of-season hunt for the end portal, then publish the seed after its been found?)
Especially when it comes to finding slime chunks, it helps sooo much. On top of that, certain mods (like minihud, tweakeroo) support overlays for structures such as nether fortresses, ocean monuments, witch huts etc if you are able to access the /seed command, helping a lot with building farms.

Absolutely up for discussion, one can live and play without, but it would be nice in my opinion.

The idea is to try and make "Main" a bit more difficult, so that it is a bit more of a challenge. I'm not 100% sure how the grave changes will come into affect, but the end result is that the graves will either require a token to use (which will likely be a drop), or they will simply be time limited and expire after a while.

Difficulties would be largely unchanged I think. There is an argument to make Seasonal hard after the next reset, but that's out of the scope of this current discussion and something for another day. The new world would just be "Normal".

I don't think we would be able to give people the ability to turn plugins on/off easily. My suggestion really would be if you don't want to use the grave system, just don't use it (or break it and throw the stuff away). The possible complexities here from our side outweigh any real benefit. And I think the world choice further diminishes the usefulness of this.

Again, with item transfers, we've done this before in previous resets, but it's a pain in the arse to organise, to be completely honest. We're proposing that Main (as it is now) and Permanent are linked until 1.17, so there would plenty scope for people to move stuff before the next reset, and after that they would be unlinked and completely separate worlds.

And I will raise the subject of seed publishing again. It has been discussed at length before and the vote was to keep those private.

I would emphasise at this point there are no immediate planned changes to "Main", anything we do there will be when Season 5 starts, and that can all be discussed closer to the time.

Also, another important point. Hangout (from a technical / server / plugin side) is run by @WearyWalker and myself, in a handful of snatched hours that we can find in the week. We don't get paid for his, it's not a job, and this separates us from your larger server setups where all sorts of things are possible because there's paid staff. As such, anything that puts more of an overhead on us from a technical side, is less likely to be palatable.

We want to give you world setups that are approachable to as wide a variety of play styles as possible, and this isn't easy, but I feel the suggestions above get us close to that. Yes we may end up splitting players across more worlds, but since people tend (on the whole) to be solitary builders, and since we have network-wide chat, I really don't think this a massive issue. Couple that with being able to more easily jump between worlds, and I think we're as close as we can be to catering for every play style (fast builders, casual players, vanilla advocates).

Honestly this sounds amazing. A world with the mods of main and the persistence of vanilla is a great middle ground. Especially when you include a slowly growing border which allows for new world gen updates to be incorporated into the play area.

I get what CBenni is saying about a fractured player base but we already have that a bit now between main and vanilla. Cross world chat can help minimize this. While the player base may seem fractured between different worlds, adding a permanent world could increase the number of players on the server at a time because a new play style is being offered that will allow existing members to who may have stopped playing get back into it.

When I joined hangouts I never thought the server would grow like it has and include multiple worlds just to support the member's different play styles. I really appreciate all the time and effort the staff spends making hangouts a reality.

You guys are the best!

A split player base is better than none at all.

I think this covers the extremes while also finding a middle ground that we've had trouble landing in. It might be as close to "perfect" as the server can get, providing balanced options for our variety of players as well as simplifying the work that needs to be done by the Staff.

I like it.

I don't play much mc atm, but I will probably return at some point. This plan sounds good to me.
I don't need the seed published or the graves, but I can understand those who like it. It does make things easier.

In terms of updates, that would just be same way any other long term world/map, by opening new terrain.

The point of all this I guess it that people have options, if you like fresh terrain and a new start, you'll likely pick Seasonal as your primary home. Graves will still work, they might just change a little, and you'll have to go to the End to mend tools, but that's just how it used to work.

and why can't seasonal have the "nice stuff" as well ? like the perma-map

There is no possible way to give everyone exactly what they want. The staff has listened to the feedback from members and has come up with a plan to try and meet the wishes of as many members as possible. The only difference, really, is the XP shower. But, an ender farm or the new gold farms you can make in the nether are basically the same thing.

If it wasn't for RL stuff like eating & sleeping, & other duties i would probably play 24/7! I die regularly at least 2-3 times daily, mostly from mobs if not my own stupidity so graves are so appreciated. I enjoy seasonal but do wish it was just a bit longer as i build slow and never actually "finish" my build. Ill have to think a bit on how to improve upon near perfection, i think you guys have nailed it.
