(I found two spots, one near my base and one more central, on seasonal that I think would be manageable but no good if permanent is the plan :D)
We can build on either seasonal or permanent. The maps will be saved for posterity any way. I actually think permanent is better as we can continue to add to it. Maybe new members in the future, after season 6 is over, would like to add their face to the map. I actually really like this idea of a living document.
If we pick a spot (place dynmap sign for possible candidates) I can go layout where exactly 6 panel would be on the landscape. This will guide the digging.
If everyone is agreed on permanent, I can provide beacons to cover that area for the dig.

My base isnt ready for an open house , but anyone wanting to give tours of theirs, maybe we could set up a wall near spawn and signs can be placed? Or have it in the Community Cave build area? Speaking of that (as I have no clue about it) is there any organized thoughts or direction of what can be built? Any size limits, plot area per person? Theme... anything to get the ideas flowing?

For the World Map idea, I think there is at least 2 viable options.

1) a smaller flat world map, probably 2 panels, with the goal of allowing people to add there player face to it, presumably where they live. A player face probably would be 8x8? So consider that into overall scale. A 2 panel is 256 wide and 128 tall.

2) a larger plot, 3 panel if it works proportionally, and would probably leave space on the sides for some type of Hangouts logo or something as Tigger had mentioned. OR a huge 6 panel. The 6 panel would also allow for some terrain details, maybe landmarks or wonders, but yes, a huge amount of work that may not bring immediate satisfaction.

TBM posted about the lush cave community build idea in the lead up to season 6. We've set it up so it's easy to access with TP's from both spawn and the shopping district. It's actually quite big with 3 different interconnected cave systems and an abandon mine system connecting some parts of it. It also has large openings out to an ice covered mountain. You can be as close to or as far away as you like. Some of the caves are like a maze and lead away from the centre. We made one of the caves safe for those who don't want to deal with mobs and we've turned parts of the abandon mine into lockers where you can stash materials as you get ready to build.
I think the idea is that this could serve as an alternate to having spawn houses. In part because spawn is quite contained in the crater of a mountain and also because the lush cave biome is so awesome. It would be really cool to have an underground city that organically grows as the season progresses. (other staff chime if I missed something)
In regard to plots and size etc. I don't think there is a limit. The same sort of thing that applies to building a spawn house.... sign your builds, respect others space, if you think you're too close just PM the person you're near. (I personal don't mind people being close as it creates a sense of density but it does require some coordination)
I've already started building there. I think I'm the only one so far. I plan to make my build entirely on the roof of one of the caves. If someone wanted to build underneath me I'd be fine with that. Or, if someone wanted to join my roof top village I'd also be cool with that too (PM me if that's interesting).
If we did base tours I'd probably show the lush cave (my farm base is nothing special). Maybe that would be a good opportunity to introduce people to the space.

If we put it to a vote I'd go for the 6 panel version. I think it'll look the best and have room for everyone to put their heads on where they are in the world. I'd also vote for doing it on permanent so it'll always be there for future players to add to. The desert just north of spawn might be a good spot. It's pretty flat, very accessible, and sand/sandstone is wicked fast to mine with beacons. Might have to cover some water or dig into the mountains further north a bit. For the players who don't have any kit yet on permanent I'm sure some of us wealthy permanent residents (I'm looking at you Benni ;)) could kit you out for the project.

Not sure if doing actual faces on a world map would work because many players are concentrated into smaller places, such as England. On a 2 plot map, England and Ireland together are only 24 blocks. Even on a large 6 plot area, would be less than 50 blocks (and not a single 8x8 area).

I guess the solution may be to do some zoomed in areas? Or country size dependent on population density? (but that kind of loses the nice map appearance of the ones you posted). I think there are various ways "geography" deals with this as an issue but I am not at all knowledgable lol. Do we have any geographers on the forum? :D
I guess also some of us could go in the sea near the UK if necessary. I'd be quite happy to!

Actually does dynmap work on permanent? I may be doing something wrong but it's not working for me currently.

Do you think banners with people’s names would work? Or are we looking at putting a single high contrasting block to indicate locations?

I agree, Perm is probably a good idea. I had not noticed that spot North of Spawn, I did however see the desert near South Teleport. It is a little bigger desert, but I cant say for sure it would be easier to clear than the other location that is close to spawn. But I think the differentiator would be if it is desired to have it close to spawn? Or better to be not that close?

Yeah, that desert in the south would probably be better. We can make a custom teleport with a pretty building at spawn with the map on display to draw people’s attention. I can see the teleport taking you to a really tall tower overlooking the map plot. When I’m working on a map it’s always fun to fly up high and view the entire plot from the air.

I think it'd be fine away from spawn as long as we put in transport links (or near one of the directional teleports). Too close and it kind of messes up people's spawn houses.

That didn’t take long! I guess the next step would be to layout the map. Tig’s working on the pattern. We could gather the materials while we wait. Any thoughts on what mats we’re going to use? I got lots of wool. I can also pigment my sheep farm the colors we want and afk collect more. 6 panels will need 24 double chests to cover.
